The jewelry and utensils class from Hildesheim (HAWK) Schmuck- und Gerät aus Hildesheim (HAWK)(Link öffnet einen neuen Tab) once again presents itself to the GRASSIMESSE audience, this time the students' work was created under the direction of Prof. Melanie Isverding, who has been leading the class together with Prof. Hartwig Gerbracht since 2019.
"In the competence field of metal design, we combine the contexts of art, design and craftsmanship. The creative basis for this is a comprehensive understanding of the effect and significance of materials and forms. The aesthetic, cultural and physical aspects are addressed and practiced and used both analogue and digitally.
Central intentions for design processes are our constantly changing environment, current cultural events and individual needs. The resulting questions are reflected upon together and the motifs developed can become profile-forming for our students. The artistic forms of expression are free and the possibilities are very diverse. Therefore, the aim of our course is to accompany and encourage you to find your own expressiveness and form of expression in your work and to develop a sense of authenticity. A vessel, a piece of furniture, a piece of jewelry, an object in relation to the body or to space can stand for an artistic position. Thus, the tasks and results between use-oriented, applied and free, artistic orientations become apparent. Our students have different prior knowledge of working techniques and an understanding of materials. In our workshops, they receive individualized offers of techniques and use them creatively, innovatively and professionally. You can therefore study the diverse dimensions and interaction of space, body and material, apply them creatively in exercises and projects and develop your individual profile in the field of metal design. In line with this approach, you can combine the following areas of study or specialize in one area:
> Jewelry and body-related objects - goldsmiths
> Tableware and vessels - silversmiths
> Architectural and spatial works - metal construction/forging
An interdisciplinary exchange between the teaching areas of the faculty, as well as
across faculties and universities is encouraged.
Building on the six-semester Bachelor's program, we promote the further development of your individual design skills as well as your leadership and management skills in the four-semester Master's program.
This year, we are particularly pleased to present four student positions from the field of metal design at the Grassi-Messe 2020. These four students represent the multi-layered thinking and work in metal design. Our BA and MA students develop a wide variety of profiles and orientations based on perspectives that can be found in metal design." University of Art and Design Halle/Saale
The class of Prof. Klaus Michel(Link öffnet einen neuen Tab) (Link öffnet einen neuen Tab)Innenarchitektur/Mobile Einrichtungen(Link öffnet einen neuen Tab) (Link öffnet einen neuen Tab) at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle) will present a wide range of possible applications for the new material "Relea". A recycled leather that is also suitable as an upper material thanks to its structure.
"In the leather industry, there are around 1.4 million tons of leather waste worldwide that cannot be recycled and is currently disposed of thermally (probably several times more, as millions of small craft businesses are not included here). The production of upper leather requires (very roughly estimated) twice as much energy as the production of steel. Whether animals are only used for landscape conservation or are bred on an industrial scale - leather is always produced, and therefore also leather waste. RELEA is a new type of material made from recycled leather. Previously, recycled leather was never used as an upper material due to its low resilience, but this is now changing with RELEA (REcykled LEAther). Yves Saint Laurant is conducting the first product trials. RELEA will be launched as a brand and material in fall 2019, but we can already work exclusively with the furniture collection in advance. RELEA is very easy to shape like leather. Its high tensile strength enables thermoforming, shape bonding and the like with very simple means and short setting times.
B. Task: 1. a chair, a table a dingelingeling: We will explore the material in two workshops - from classic processing options to experimental ones. With this background knowledge, they will design a chair, a table and another smaller accessory and realize them 1:1. The RELEA material is available to us in "epic breadth". a chair a table a Dingelingeling or RELEA - a material and its potential:"
Presentation Lubok Verlag
Linocut books by Lubok Verlag, whose publisher is the artist Christoph Ruckhäberle, will be presented at the fair.
Lubok Verlag has been publishing a series of original graphic books with linocuts by contemporary artists since 2007. As the guest country at this year's Grassimesse, Lithuania is presenting its lively art and design scene with three exhibits: The Vartai Gallery, founded in 1991 as Lithuania's first private gallery, is showing experimental furniture by Marija Puipaitė and Vytautas Geċas. The Lithuanian Design Forum brings selected Lithuanian art and design objects, which are effectively presented in the museum's pillar hall. The Lithuanian Cultural Institute is a public institution that sustainably supports international cultural partnerships.
"The design fair in Leipzig is probably the only major international cultural event in Europe and one of the few in the world that has not been postponed or canceled. Many of the Lithuanian Cultural Institute's plans to promote Lithuanian culture abroad had to be adjusted this year. For example, the book fairs in Leipzig, London and Bologna were canceled, the Frankfurt Book Fair was moved to the digital space, and a whole series of festivals also did not take place. This year, the Grassimesse is an outstanding example of a live event that has been adapted to the current restrictions. Only a few designers are traveling to Leipzig to present their objects; the others who are staying in Lithuania will be very well represented by their works there." (Director of the Lithuanian Cultural Institute Aušrinė Žilinskienė)
Galery Vartai
Gallery Vartai ('Tor'), founded in 1991, is the largest private gallery in Lithuania. From the exhibitions it originally organized, it has gradually expanded its activities to a much wider range of projects. Cooperation with artists, galleries and institutions from Lithuania and beyond is one of the most important principles of the gallery's activities today.
At the fair, Vartai Gallery presents the furniture and light installation "Personal Sunset" by Martynas Kazimierėnas , the "Unclosable Shelf" and the chair "Ku-dir-ka" by Paulius Vitkauskas as well as the two latest furniture collections by Vytautas Gečas and Marija Puipaitė under the titles "Envisioned Comfort" and "Romanticism and Gravity".
Design-Forum Lithuania
The Lithuanian Design Forum connects the business world and design in Lithuania. Founded in 2006, the association is the only one of its kind in Lithuania to maintain a permanent office and staff and is actively and consistently committed to the interests of design. It not only represents the interests of its members, but also cooperates with numerous players in the Lithuanian design ecosystem, including universities, ministries, embassies and cultural institutes, science and business development institutions as well as design associations abroad. The Lithuanian Design Forum is increasingly receiving requests from public institutions for the preparation of strategy papers, so that it is also involved in the development of the corresponding political directions. The Forum is the organizer of the Design Week festival and the Good Design in Lithuania Award competition.
The Lithuanian Design Forum presents visitors to the Grassimesse with a collection specially curated for the fair under the title "Twelve Chairs Lithuanian Design". The title is inspired by the black satire "Twelve Chairs" by Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov, which has become a classic. Just like in the novel from the early Soviet era, each of the chairs on display in the exhibition has its own history and character - naïve, moving, reserved or harking back to old times. The chair as an inseparable element of man's material environment, which for many designers constitutes a creative challenge and proof of creative mastery, is represented by the works of Etc.etc. (EMKO), Dalius Razauskas (Kitaip), Justinas Žlioba, Marija Puipaitė (IDDO), Marija Ščerbakovaitė-Gruzbarzdė, Mindaugas Žilionis, MUISTA, Nauris Kalinauskas, Pušku pušku, Simonas Tarvydas (INDI), Sedes Regia and Žilvinas Stankevičius.
Lithuanien Cultural Institute
The Lithuanian Cultural Institute is a public institution established by the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture, whose main task is to promote Lithuanian culture abroad. The mission of the Cultural Institute includes creating sustainable international cultural partnerships and demonstrating the value of Lithuanian art in today's context. At the Grassi Fair, it will present the works of seven designers who were selected in a competition held in May.
Inga Likšaitė is presenting three works from the "Body of Work" series (digital embroidery on canvas) in Leizig. Rokas Dovydėnas is represented with an installation of clay vases with pencil decorations. Aušrinė Augustinaitė is showing her collection of dining and side tables as well as vases made of cast ceramic in three sizes under the title "radii". Also on display are jewelry objects by Eglė Čėjauskaitė and Ieva Grigienė, Rūta Indriūnaitė presents vases and Christmas tree decorations, and Antanas Gerlikas contributes his glass works.
